For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat. next to the beatles and the stones, they've had more top 40 hits in the US than any other british act in the 1960's, and more than the supremes, the four seasons and the beach boys COMBINED! whereas the beatles had the "mersey beat" sound, the DC5 had the "tottenham" sound: big beats, soulful vocal delivery, and what an upbeat production! probably the most underrated band ever right now. the DC5 aren't the only act the hall of fame has constantly ignored through the years, but they probably deserve it more than the other ignorees.
