While it would be good to have someone in Jackson's position who isn't spawning illegitimate children or employing made-up words, it's still necessary to point out that Jackson has been doing an essential service to the nation for decades now. The "Rainbow Coalition" was far more compelling than anything Sharpton has served up. At so many moments in recent history, Jackson has been there ... even though sometimes I wish he wasn't, because the media seems to turn to him as a predictable "Black Perspective" when there are so many better and more varied black voices in the public sphere. Still, Jackson has been a worthy and noble part of American culture, and deserves more respect than this.
