Actually, Samuel's dad was the brewer, and when Samuel got involved in the family business, he made rather a hash of it. Turned out that he wasn't much good at the brewing end of the business, or the business end of it either.
This led him to a career as a tax collector, during which time he developed strong relationships with the merchants of Boston and launched his eventual career as a politician.
He was the first to propose a Continental Congress and quickly became a passionate advocate for independence.
All in all a great patriot, and while I believe the beer is named after him, he didn't actually brew it.
