Fidel Castro (Cuba) 2

Appears that his race is all but run, and the speculation now is on his successor and what changes will occur in a "new" Cuba.

Castro's long tenure as leader of Cuba was marked by some domestic sucesses and as many failures.

Internationally he was less successful, becoming either a pariah, a useful stooge or a caricature in the eyes of most of the world

UPDATE: Castro is a thug of whom the best it can be said is that he sold out the people that he purported to liberate. Che is a thug in thrall to the aforementioned thug Castro. I don't see any "leftists" extolling the virtues of either, except for very stupid ones.

There are certainly campuses with said Senor Guevara shirts- but

1. Not as stylish as it was ten years ago
2. Depends (really) on geographic location of school and student makeup and
3. You'll find more at high schools than colleges

Gt, I agree with every point of your update. But the scope narrowing of "except for very stupid ones" doesn't contradict my point. Rather, I feel your update supports my basic point. Admiring and revering might or might not include extolling one's virtues. And, sucks, the masturbation reference is characteristically funny and shocking but, makes no progress toward a point. But, I guess that's not what you were after. Were there some facts that might be mentioned?

Eschew, thats a fair point, but picking the dumb liberals as exemplars of the entire species is picking the lowhanging fruit. Its the equivalent of using hillbilly fundamentalist racists as exemplars of conservatives.

If one really (really) believes that leftists go to bed hugging Castro and Che plush toys, then you (by all means) enjoy your faith. One cannot provide evidence or statistics to the contrary.

It's just that the experience of visiting, working, traveling and studying with people of (many) different political stripes in a few nations, I (along with others) find this particular opinion funny and naive.

But don't crow about evidence or statistics when your mind is already made up. A leftist, just like almost any other political thinker except for a dozen people in Cuba, regard Castro as a military dictator. There are a few nutzos (artists like Morrison among them) who hold naive images of the Revolution, but the whole image of leftists holding these figures in reverence isn't just antiquated, it's wrong. It speaks of the needs of the believer.

Castro and Che were filthy murdering pigs. Most intelligent people, most left and most of the right, think likewise.

Eschew, I'm having a hard time thinking of anyone who admires or reveres Castro, outside a small number of true believers. You could probably find more people who admire Stalin. In fact, based on polling I've seen from Russia, I know you could.

Stalin winds up getting a handful of fans due to some lousy teaching of American history in the public schools-

Stalin winds up getting (conveniently) lumped into the Brit/American/Russian faction that squeezed Berlin. . .teachers have to rush through material and don't spend time on Global 20th century history and (properly) focus on American 20th century history.

What gets presented as some imagined leftist appeal of Stalin is a historical ignorance of the Hitler-esque tendencies of this murderer by many students with no interest in history. . .but most people with three brain cells in their heads know better.

Actually, a few goofy 'leftist' professors (quite tepid by American standards) were the ones who showed me the murderous tendencies of Stalin, Che, and Castro. .. and for this (for filling in the gaps that my public schools didn't) they have to answer for being silent or overt supporters of those who have little or no sense of liberty. Right-wing fear-mongering at its absolute worst. Oh, for what it's worth the leftists still don't want the terrorists to win. . .

Outside of academia, its worth noting that some of the first to blow the whistle on Stalin were leftists, even communists. Orwell, Tuominen, Kirov and Bullock all criticized or denounced him during his lifetime.
