Budapest, Hungary

reviewed by TrvlAm

In 1873 the towns of Buda and Obuda merged with Pest to create Budapest, the 6th largest city in the European Union. Budapest has an approximate population of 1.7 million and occupies both sides of the Danube River. During WWII nearly 1/3 of Budapest Jewish population died under Nazi persecution, and the city itself was severely damaged during the Soviet siege in 1947.

Budapest, Hungary 1

Don't go to Budapest! Hungary is just ok. There are waaayyyy better countries to visit in Europe and waaayyyy better cities than Budapest. I have met nice hungarians, like people working at my hostel or people I met at work and stuff, but a hungarian on the street or in a shop or restaurant are usually a pretty unfriendly and unsmiling bunch! I've travelled to over 10 countries in Europe and Hungary is by far one of the worst. I also got all my stuff stolen there too, by a group of theives that dressed up as train officials and when I reported this to the police they did nothing. They had cameras and could've rewound them and we told them to do that and they still didn't. Totally worthless police in a country with A LOT of crime! Don't go to Budapest!!!!!

I agree! Was given a bar bill of 550 (140000 Huf) for six drinks including two for girls. When I questioned the bill and asked for an itemised receipt they wrote 140000 on a piece of paper. I didn't have the cash so I was intimidatedly escorted to an ATM I have a daily limit of 600/700 so was limited to what I could get and had already withdrawn earlier. I left my card in the machine and it got swallowed. He was pissed off and phoned his boss. Two large men in tuxedos came and escorted me back to the bar with my arms behind my back. I negocited that they come back to my hotel and I would get the money, they added 150 for the taxi. There taxi gangster friend took us They insulted me and refered to me as English, I told them I was Irish. They said they didn't like westeners. Anyway I left one guy in the foyer and the other in the taxi after giving a false surname and room number. I pressume they are gone now. They got 150 and what ever cash I had in the bar. They will be very pissed off and out to get me. I'm out of here tomorrow but confined to my Hotel Room till then. Hopefully they won't come back. very Dodgy and dangerous. I'm here on business and would't recommend this place after what happened and especially to westerners!! It's architecturally a beautiful City. Hotel Staff are nice. People seem unfriendly otherwise. Bulgaria is as bad!!
