Rijksmuseum (State Museum)

Founded in 1808, the Rijksmuseum (State Museum) contains a vast collection of paintings from the Dutch masters of the 16th-17th centuries. The nearly one million works in the museum include paintings from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The museum is also known for its fine collection of Asian art.

Rijksmuseum is cool, though it didn't grab me as much as the Van Gogh Museum next door. What I liked about it is that it attempts to tell the history of the Netherlands via its artists, and is chronologically presented. I liked especially the emphasis on art about ships and the sea (the Dutch navy were a powerful force back in the day).
