For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat. Listen to 'Do You Love Me' and tell me it ain't better than the Contours (very good) version of the song. Or that 'I Like it Like That' by the DC5 doesn't rock more than Chris Kenners' recording of that great R&B cut. The reason all the 60's Hammond B3 keyboardists played while standing up was simply an homage to Mike Smith...(also one of the greatest vocalists in the history of R&R). Ask Paul Shaffer why HE never uses a stool or bench. Hope you are doing well, Mike...we're praying for you. The Dave Clark 5 belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Period.
