Hollywood Video 2

I work at hollywood video and although i have to adimit they do treat their employees like crap most of the time (other employees will recognize that new 4 e's crap), I think most customer complaints are bogus. I can't even tell you how many times I went out on the floor and scoured the shelves for a movie someone swore they returned only to not find it and have it mysteriously show up in the overnight dropbox a week later. And the joke about us not looking for your movies, it's part of our daily morning paperwork to go out and look for each and every movie that has been "returned" by an irate customer. I'll admit sometimes we find it on the shelves and it just wasn't checked in, but I'd say 80% of the time the customer just forgot to return it and then forgot they forgot. Now with that out of the way I'd just like to say that I hate this company with a passion. We recently had a couple of stores close down in my district. I wasn't too worried because we all knew which stores it would be, there are 3 that hardly make a profit, and I had been recently transferred to a mall kiosk which were considered safer than the stores for closings. The manager of this kiosk quit and put me up for his replacement. For almost a month I was doing his job for my pay, without a single complaint because I thought the job was mine. Then without warning, and I mean absolutely none, another mall kiosk closed down and they placed the manager from there at my store as the manager. And when I say there was no warning I mean for neither of us. He showed up for work on monday and there were boxes and a letter telling him to pack up the movies and ship them to my store. He didnt yet know that he was being placed at my store, so he thought he was just out of a job too. And I didn't find out that I wasnt being promoted until he showed up and took over. All I got was a crappy "thank you for running this store all this time on a cashier's pay". So, even though the company sucks, I dont want to see them close down like this because there are thousands of people who will be out a job (as much as it sucks)with very little or no warning. If they make it out of this and I still work here, I'll be leading the fight for a union so the employees can be treated better.

A Union? For video store cashiers? How big do you think video rental is these days? People won't pay for that crap. If you form a union you'll only force your employer to replace you with a computer that never complains, never takes days off, offers a better long-term return on investment and will actually tell the customer right away whether a video is in stock or not. Look up Redbox, log on to NetFlix, or just watch Pay-Per-View (no late fees at ALL) and you'll see why you are in a dying industry. A Union? Seriously? Customer complaints about outrageous late fees are not bogus at all. Video rental stores offer little relative value, with an extremely high overhead, and attitudes like yours regarding the customer do not help the future of your industry. I'd rather rent from a computer than some prick who calls me a liar and a jackass and tries to charge me late fees amounting to twice the cost of a dvd to buy outright. This is a crappy business model, and people have wised up to this scam. A union won't save your job, because it's a foregone conclusion that you're lost it already and just don't know it yet.
