New York City, NY

reviewed by fitman

New York City is made up of approximately 50 islands, including Manhattan, its most famous one. Most of the other islands tend to be small, but the larger ones contain the boroughs of Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn. The Bronx is the only borough physically attached to Manhattan.

New York City, NY 3

Once the center of the universe, post Giuliani New York has become Cleveland with taller buildings. The corporate takeover is 99% complete and the Mom'n'Pops that made the city great have almost completely disappeared. Rents are so high, the kind of adventurous young people who brought artistic excitement to New York can't afford to move here anymore. Still. you might find some archeological sites of interest, and you might find something to do off off Broadway if you search diligently.

UPDATE:

If you like disco dancing to twitchy music, shopping at the same stores you can find at your local mall, and paying $3,000 a month to live in a tenement, NO FUN CITY is for you!

However, if you like the real thing, try to time your visit to THE FIVE POINTS BAND at Rodeo Bar, or a SEA MONSTER show.

(Note: Rabid Motley Van Cooper / Billy Joel fans should feel free to ignore this good advice.)

UPDATE:

Two more of my favorite venues for real rock'n'roll in New York City...

Otto's Shrunken Head

Kenny's Castaways

Ouch. I doubt there's much to be found, archaeologically speaking, in the city that (more than any other in the U.S.) regularly rips down its own history, block by block. Still, I'd rather be there than in Cleveland any day.

Generally, whenever I make a trip to the Big Playground of the Rich, I feel like I'm just a tourist throwing my meager money around. BTW, your tips on clubs are fantastic. I'd add the Knitting Factory, though even there I feel like a tourist.

It sure is "the big playground of the rich", but there are a few things left that are worth seeing. Of course prices are outrageous 'cause the landlords can get insane rents for stores too. Recommended: John's Pizzeria on Bleecker Street; Haveli Indian Restaurant - 100 2nd Ave between 5th St & 6th St (order appetizers and make a meal of them); and the Staten Island Ferry (free).
