Remington 11-87 2

I've been duck and pheasant hunting with my 1187 for about 12 years, no major problems but the occasional jam until the other day. I was sitting in my duck blind and the first flight of mallards brought on the first shot. Whammo, the piece of junk disintegrated in my hands. Let me preface this by saying this is the first year I've switched over to Kent Fasteel, 1560fps. Earlier this week I received the go-ahead from my CFO to purchase a new toy after a legendary Thanksgiving weekend at our local indian casino. I called my dealer and inquired about price and availability for a Remington 1178 3&1/2" Super Mag, nive to match the other two Rem autos in the gunsafe. He told me right off to stay away from that shotgun! He said he'd had a half dozen come back in for repair since the start of this duck season, they just didn't hold up. He said if I wanted a new shotgun the Winchester SX3 was comparable in price, he'd sold a ton of them, not one had come back thru the doors to be fixed for any reason. It's ironic, because I was going to drive the 50 miles from the blind to his shop right after I was done hunting that morning and purchase the SX3. Now I'll miss 10 days of the duck season and be all outfitted with a new SX3 and a fixed up 1187. I think I'll save myself some grief and go back to standard Winchester mag shotgun ammo when using the 1187. Oh, a guy in my fishing club e-mailed me to say he had TWO 1187's fall apart in TWO shots on a Washington duck hunt this year, his first out-of-state guided hunt.

First of all let me start with I've been a Remington fan most of my life. I always felt that you could buy prettier guns, more expensive guns, but not one could be found that was more dependable, pointed better, or a better value for the money. I used to be an extreme duck hunter when I was younger, crawling through muddy fields, laying on ice or frozen sandbars all day was the norm. I've got several 870's with no bluing or finish that I stake my life on today. They would always fire and reload when my partners automatics were jammed with windblown sand or ice. Although the old wingmaster sometimes required both hands to shuck - it would. These guns were definitely abused by many years of hard hunting along with their use to break ice, use as clubs, crutches, boat paddles - whatever was needed.
I also have several 1100's and one 1187. The 1187 I shot for several years even after most of my friends went to Benellis or Berettas. My problem is last year I had a shell jam and on the second shot after that the gun fell apart. I was trying to catch all the pieces before they fell in the water and clear the unburnt powder from my eyes. The magazine tube had pulled out from the receiver and this lets the barrel, bolt, forearm, receiver, magazine and shells all going in different directions.
This appears to me to be just short of the worst thing that can happen to a shotgun in lieu of the receiver or barrel exploding. Not only were my eyes full of unburnt powder but also the next two guys to my right in the blind. This necessitated my having to go back to the truck for some more eyewash for my partners.
This was not a case of abuse or neglect for proper gun maintenance but clearly a manufacturing defect or design flaw as nothing the operator can do should cause this effect. This is a key design and manufacturing element of not only the 1187 but also the 1100 and 870. Once the magazine tube pulls from the receiver nothing is held together. The only thing the operator has any impact on this design is how tight the end cap is hand tightened.
Has this happened to anyone else?
