Houston Astros

reviewed by Loerke

The franchise began play in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45's and changed its name to the Astros in 1965. An NL Central team, the Astros play their home games at Enron Field in Houston, TX.

Houston Astros 1

The team had one great thing going for it during the '90s and most of the '00s: its ability to keep Bagwell and Biggio together. So they get a star for that. But the Astros are known primarily for a few ignoble things: (1) having Astroturf named after them; (2) leaving town for a month in 1992 so that the GOP could occupy its home field for the national convention; and (3) fielding the infamous "whites-only" pennant team of 2005.

thats a pretty stupid statement refering to them (Astros) as a racist team in 2005. They did have Willie Taveras (a latino) as well as Umberto Quintero, Ezequil Astacio, Wandy Rodriguez. Truth is their minor league farm system sucks, and they had to make do with what they had, which was a bunch of below avg white guys and below avg latino players. Those players got them there though in 2005. Its not like they are gonna stay a white team forever. Be real. lol As for the Astrosturf....well it was first used there. Can you think of a much better name. Doesnt sound that bad to me lol. Your entitled to your opinion. Didnt like your comment about them being an all white pennant team in 2005. I live in Houston and watch every game. That was simply not true

Good comment. I was basing the idea about the team being all-white on a column by Dave Zirin in his Edge of Sports column: http://www.edgeofsports.com/2006-02-15-177. He actually says that there were no black players on the team, so that is not the same about being all white. I forgot about the Latino players; but, in my defense, they were pretty forgettable. Anyway, I was wrong. As for the Astroturf, what I meant is that the Astros' name is now associated with artifical turf: not a good thing. But I have another problem with the Astros for ya: playing in a stadium that used to be called "Enron Field." Haaah!
