Dillard's 1

Well, I was an ASM for Dillard's for a few years and I finally walked away because I got tired of the poor treatment of their employees. I was very honest when I interviewed people for the job which the other managers only said all the positives about working at Dillard's. I gave them all scenarios. Pay increases, Pay Cuts, and a possibility of losing their job if they did not make the 67% rule.

I was a hands on manager that was there to help out in anyway. I ran the shoes area and I knew about the markdowns and stock issues in regards to the staff not being on the sales floor to make sales. So, I would come in early and scan the entire stockroom and sometimes sticker the boxes before my associates would arrive and all they had to do was label the floor, arrange the markdowns, and take turns with the stock.  I had the best staff in the store and did whatever possible to make their day as fun as possible since they had their qoutas to deal with. I would purchase cakes on their birthdays and arrange a holiday buffet out of my pocket to show gratiude for all their hard work. I would thank them all for their hard work before I left for the day. But everyone knows the stupid sales, being hard working does not cut it so I would lose great people because they would either quit or get fired for the lack of sales. Where I worked the Dillard's sales were trending down for 10 years and no matter how hard the staff or I work we very rarely make the month and the year.

The ASM review is if I did not get an increase, I would not get a raise so I went the four years without a raise. My boss told me that since I could not get an increase in my department he would not consider promoting me to a larger volume department and gave me a deadline of making my months in the next three months or I would be fired.  Even with that lingering over my head, I still remain the same with the staff because it was not their fault that the store was losing business. So the week before inventory, my staff and I had everything ready and my maps were done and numbered for inventory. My boss called me and asked if I was done with my inventory and I said yes. Then later that afternoon, he called me to his office and said he was moving me to a larger area but with the same pay because that manager of that dept was lazy and had nothing ready for inventory which I had 5 days to get the department done. So, I remembered what he told me and about not moving me to a bigger area because of sales and I had a feeling he was using me to clean up another dept and then letting me go shortly after inevtory because he knew my inventories in the past were successful and the new one taking over my old area could sit and wait since everything was done. So as I look at my completed maps and assignments for inventory that night in my house. I said screw it and I ripped everything and the next morning I told my boss, I QUIT! He had the nerve to ask if my maps were done, and I said yes they are in my desk. (Ha Ha) if he only knew they were in my trash.  I am so happy to see Dillard's stocks down 46% for 2007. They deserve it!

I commend you for this post! It sounds like you really went above and beyond what you were suppose to do. How rare it is to hear this because all of the ASMS I dealt with were quite different. You sound as if you put your heart it in but of course DILLARD'S makes sure to take a big crap on the good associates! I too am so elated to hear that the sales are down. I hope they go down even further. I still continue to deter people from shopping there!

By the way... I think we all collectively applaud you for ripping up the maps. I can imagine the confusion it created! Inventory was beyond Hell to go through!
