True Christian--What is a true Christian? 4

I would say that any person who believes in the Nicene Creed or the digest version, the Apostles Creed, is on the short list for being a Christian.

Here is the Nicene Creed that I took from the Lutheran Churches Book of Worship:

"We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen."

My dear fundamentalist friends may note that the Nicene Creed does not mention the Bible.  Why is that?  The Bible did not come into existence until several hundred years after the death of Christ.  The Church made the Bible and declared what books would be included.  The early Church proceeded on Holy Tradition, the writings of the Apostolic Fathers, and reference to whatever books were circulating at that time.

It's not about the Creed. That is a big list of words that boil things down some for those raised within the faith. Look simpler. The Greek and Latin roots for the word Christian translate most literally as "one who is like Christ." That says to me that those who follow Christ's example in caring for the least among us, or serving those around you in loving kindness, that is being a Christian. The point of all that is not to earn the gift of grace, but to say "thank you" to God who gave it freely to all of us. :)

False..

Believe what you will, train dude. The nice thing about our faith is it is ultimately between each of us individually and our Creator.

Poor Rocktrain69. The iron verdict of history shows that the creed is not false, but true. I suppose you are a Bible-thumper. The Bible came long after Christianity was established by the Councils of the Church. Anyone who can read and write will be able to determine that for himself.

Creeds are not false, it is when you say mr hun, that they make you a Christian, you are nuts!

My point to the both of you is that the Creed does not matter to God, nor do all the other trappings we have put on our faith. God simply wants us to come to Him, open and broken, to accept the free gift of grace, and go forth as His hands, feet, heart and voice, to share God's love with those around us daily as we walk down our roads, hand in hand with Christ. All the other stuff we heap on doesn't matter, and only serves to hinder our walk, much like all our sin still can when we do not lay it down at the cross.
