Romney is a good candidate; he has a solid grasp of most
policy issues and he has a good record in the private sector. However, if
he is nominated, I doubt that he will be elected. Besides the fact that
he doesn't empathize well with voters, his record in the private sector will
hurt him in this political environment, especially in the general
election. The Democrats will almost certainly use the fact that as CEO of
Bain Capital, he helped restructure companies, while at the same time cutting
jobs. It might not be a fair attack, that’s just part of the business he
was in, but nevertheless, such an attack will be potent, especially if the
economy turns worse and it starts hitting middle class voters. Being a
Venture Capitalist is very lucrative, but it is not the best profession to take
if you expect to get into politics!
What is a positive for Romney right now, his business record, will be turned
into a negative by the opposition. This is similar to what happened to
John Kerry: what was a positive for him early on, his military record,
was spun into a negative by the Republicans. I'm sure the Democrats are
licking their chops to get a chance to go against Romney. McCain on the
other hand, would be much more immune to such attacks, hence why he's the
stronger candidate in the race.
