Carry around a cell phone when they're 13 5

I'm involved in the running of a non-profit organization that runs a music hall in an inner city neighbourhood.  Last night there was a concert by a young singer-songwriter that drew a largely teen, largely female audience.  I was standing at the back of the hall watching the show and as I looked over the crowd I noticed that probably 1/4 of the audience was holding up their cell phone, recording the show and watching it through the little 1 1/2 inch screen on their phones.  What the hell was the point of coming out to a live concert if the only thing you really wanted to do was go home and then download it so you could see it on YouTube?

The flip side of this coin: I wish I'd photographed/filmed/video'd the amazing thing's I've seen - both on stage and off.

All the video or audio tape in the world is just a souvenir. At its best, the live music experience should be a once in a lifetime moment for the audience and the artist. Granted that's not the case when Celine Dion takes to the Vegas stage for the tenth time this week. But when Clarence Gatemouth Brown hooks up with a local blues bar band and storms throw a couple of sets in front of 150 people, there should be something magic that you won't capture on your cell phone. Enjoy the show and relish the memory.

I hear you, but I'm also grateful for the opportunity to see Muddy at Newport on YouTube, 'cause he's not with us anymore and I didn't go.

Good point. I think YouTube is probably the application that the internet was invented for. I want to show my kids a snippet of something that I used to watch from days gone by, I'm almost certain to find it on YouTube. If you want to see the actual event that the 6 o'clock news is shaving down to a 7 second clip, the whole thing is probably on YouTube. If you always wanted to see one of those old two reel films of the great jazz bands of the 40's, go to YouTube. Here's hoping the copyright lawyers don't kill it.
