They are practical if you have a large family, and if you take all the back seats out, they can haul a fair amount of cargo. No one really wants to be seen driving a minivan (I'm actually drivng my parents minivan now, I borrowed it to move some stuff out of my apartment), but sometimes it's just the most appropriate choice of vehicle.
