CanadaSucks review below is top-notch, and goes a lot deeper than the LOTR Gandalf stuff which usually gets bandied about.
His performance in Richard III is rivetting, the best I have seen in that role, and his lesser known work is almost without exception excellent.
Like Canada, I suspect his open sexuality and activism scared off a lot of Hollywood producers
