The Red Telephone- Love

About 2 years ago, I discovered Arthur Lee's Love almost by accident, and it was "love" at first listen. They have very few songs that aren't great that I've heard, and this assuredly is among the foremost of all those great songs...eerie and beautiful...but as Oscar mentions, its meaning is a bit obscure, although the opening lyrics-- "Sitting on a hillside, Watching all the people die, I'll feel much better on the other side, I'll thumb a ride..." -- do not convey warm, wholesome feelings for sure. As I've said before, it's a true, true shame that one of the greatest, most influential and creative groups of the 1960's is so unknown to most mainstream audiences, then as well as now. Everyone who hasn't heard them should go out asap and buy one of their CD's-- critics do consider "Forever Changes" to be their best, but every CD of theirs that I've heard is loaded with gems. For me, discovering Love was akin to a religious experience.

I've read that MacLean became a Born-Again Christian and before he died put out some CD's of Christian music that actually were supposed to be quite good. As distasteful and dull as I find 99.9% of "Christian" music to be, I've been tempted to track down one or 2 of MacLean's works to give them a listen.

Critics neglect Bryan MacLean who may have been just as important to Love's brilliance as Lee, but there's no doubt that the band was much more than the sum of its parts and fell apart when Lee and MacLean parted company. A punk version of the Bacharach/David song *My Little Red Book* was their big hit.
