Jonas Edward Salk (1914-1995)

American microbiologist who developed the first effective killed-virus vaccine against polio (1954).

Today is May 1, and on this date in history, in 1956, Dr. Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was released to the public. There really was a panic about the disease in the early 1950's that is hard to realize today. Nobody gets polio anymore, but they sure did in the old days. President Franklin Roosevelt was the most famous victim.

I am 65 and I know several people near my age who are polio victims. The vaccine was immediately dispensed all over the country and the disease was ended.
