Beck was an innovator, stylistically and technically. Few probed the function of a whammy bar as thoroughly as he did. He increased his speed by eschewing a conventional pick, instead using his thumb; the technique was employed by later players such as Toy Caldwell. Live, Beck plays like a natural, almost effortlessly working intriguing music out of his guitar.
