He could take a better punch than he could deliver, and was a ferociously determined fighter who was a pleasure to watch.

Much as I like Mancini, and loved to watch him fight, he is not truly in the top echelon of fighters, nor is he at the top of a "big hitter" list. He fought hard and he would take three punches to deliver one, but he was no better than above average.

Don't be deceived by the death of Duk Koo Kim in the ring against Mancini. Kim was overmatched, had dropped a lot of weight to fight Mancini and probably shouldn't have been in the ring at all. Once it became clear what was going on, the fight should have been stopped, probably in the 10th or 11th. If it had, Kim would probably have lived, but the fight was allowed to continue into the 14th, and Kim died five days after Mancini dropped him.

Didn't think of Gotti, but you're absolutely right.

An absolutely 100% assessment of Mancini. I would compare him to Arturo Gotti. Good, tough and when matched correctly, competitive and entertaining. A notch below the best.

He was very strong through the sixth, but noticeably falters in the 7th (I think he was dehydrated) and although he gets in a few shots in the 8th and 9th, Mancini is working him over with combinations and Kim has stopped dancing. He caught Mancini with a hook in the 11th or 12th I believe, which staggered him momentarily, but it was pretty much a dead cat bounce.

I missed this one, but I did see the '62 fight when Emile Griffith killed Bennie "The Kid" Paret on live TV. Whew...first person I ever saw done in. Think this might have been the end of Friday Night Fights...

It was a long time ago for me- wasn't Kim exchanging decent punches after the 7th?

Its the reason fights only go 12 now instead of 15. Mancini said later that his corner was telling him he was behind on points and had to knock Kim out. I've seen a few replays of the fight and its clear that Kim is done after the 7th, and should have been TKO'd in the 10th.

I saw that fight on TV as a kid- really was sobering. . .
