A relatively obscure, but worthy Hall of Famer, he had nearly 3,000
hits despite not beginning his major league career until he was 25.
It wasn't a big deal at the time to reach 3,000. A high average hitter,
hit well over 300 lifetime with lots of speed- stole as many as 63
bases but very little power. A very good defensive outfielder. As a
hitter, somewhat comparable
in certain ways to Tony Gwynn or Rod Carew, or Boggs with lots of speed, among more modern guys- not
as much of a force or a big name player in his time as they were in theirs, and not as good as those guys, but still along those general lines
as a hitter... a fairly unique player that is hard to compare with
others. Played virtually all of his long career here and was 44 when he
had his last season with Cleveland. 4.5 as an all time Senator.
