The Magnificent Seven

I used to belong to a chapter of the Alpine Club of Canada and long before there was a plaster climbing wall in every commercial gym in the land, we built a massive plywood and rock wall in a gigantic warehouse/armoury space at the local Canadian Armed Forces base (they granted us the space, we granted them access to the wall for training purposes). On Sunday nights the club had to share the space with rehearsals for the local cadet marching band. All year long the band practised (to no avail) a version of the theme from the Magnificent Seven. It was in a word F***ing brutal (OK 2 words), and over the course of the whole year never improved a bit. For my entire time with the Alpine Club, we preceded every club outing by playing at top volume a decent recording of the theme to inspire us and to enjoy a laugh at the painful musical struggle of the local cadet band. It is my favourite movie theme of all time.

Theres a great episode of the sitcom "Cheers" where the regulars are sitting around, and Carla starts humming the theme, within a note Norm joins in, then Cliff and Woody and Sam and Frazier and even Lilith. One of my favorite moments.
