IF you take care of your stuff, you don't have to buy as much new stuff. This means less garbage, and less landfill.

Maintenance of Existing Belongings 4

My coffee pot is a GE percolator from the 1960's, possibly the 50's, that we inherited from my wife's grandmother, and it has never once been serviced and makes a great cup of coffee.  Before that we used to go through an electric Mr. Coffee machine every few years.  Who is committing the crime against the environment, the person who tosses the machine out everytime the element burns out (which costs more to repair than the cost of a new machine), or the company that makes the piece of crap that that only lasts 36 months?

Did you know you can make coffee on the stove?

Most mornings we do, in a stove top espresso maker, since we only have one cup each. But if we are making 10 cups for guests we used to use a Mr. Coffee drip machine. The funny thing is that both my wife and I had one and we got one as a wedding present and all three died, when we took the first one to a little repair shop it was going to cost $30 labour to put a $15 part in the coffee maker, and new ones were selling for about that price. Planned obsolecence?
