I've never been a connoisseur-- I've always thought about coffee like I did about beer. If the beer gave me a buzz, and wasn't repulsive tasting or "skunky", I was ok with it, whether it was Budweiser, or Michelob, or Molson, or whatever. Same with coffee. If it has sufficient caffeine in it, if it wakes me up in the morning or keeps me awake at night when I need to stay awake, then I don't care if its Folger's or Maxwell House or whatever. It's ok with me. I have little patience with places like Starbuck's, where you need an interpreter to order a cup of black coffee, and generally need to extract a small fortune from your wallet to pay for it once you have successfully ordered. I also disdain places like Dunkin Donuts, where I think you pay 2-plus dollars now for a lousy cup of coffee. I used to drink a ton of coffee back in the day, which didn't help my nerves or my insomnia, so as I got older, I made a conscious decision to cut down. Currently, I have 2 cups of coffee when I get up and that's it. I drink a lot more water now and find it sometimes to be more invigorating and certainly more refreshing than I ever did coffee.

Occasionally, I'll have more than 2 cups a day, but I try never to have any caffeine at all after 12 noon. It does make a difference for me. Two cups I'm ok. If I have a 3rd cup, I can actually feel it working on my nerves. Too much coffee can make me tense, irritable, and it seems to get worse the older I get, which is one of the reasons I've made a determined effort to curtail the coffee consumption (and soda, and other caffeine-containing products). It also tends to dehydrate me. For every cup of coffee I drink, I make sure I drink an equivalent amount of water.

I've been to two "coffee joints" in my life. Once was Second Cup in Edmonton and I ordered a Cafe Phil Rizzutto (or something like that). It had caramel over whipped cream. It was sexual. The next time was a Starbucks. I walked up to the counter and the lady asked, "Can I help you?" I said, "Yes, I'd like some expensive coffee." I'm like you...JUST GIVE ME COFFEE!. Now that it's warming up, I'm doing around 3 (homemade) tall iced coffees a day...
