Some video games are excellent learning tools (Age of Empire, Civilization series, simulation games). They are based on actual historical facts and figures and explore geographical territories and encounter historical enemies. I myself learn a thing or two from them. But then, there are those hypnotic games of shooting and destroying that are dumbing our children down. Again, it a matter of how much parents get involved with choosing the games and even play with their kids.
