In my city, and in a lot of others, weekly or bi-weekly community papers offer employment to kids to deliver in their neighborhood.
All three of my kids did this, at one time or another, with my blessing, to a greater or lesser degree of success.
My daughter bailed after two weeks, because it interfered with her sports and social life. My oldest son stuck it out for several years, and at one point was covering two routes and making decent money for a 12 year old. My youngest son did it for about six months, regularly recruited his buddies to help, paid them off with cans of Coke, and got fired when they screwed up.
To one degree or another, they all got something out of the experience.
