Kirkland Super Premium Chicken and Rice 1

Yeah...I'll rate it. It's like all the other DRY dog foods...INappropriate for a CARNIVORE...and that's what
dog's are. Not an omnivore. They don't need CARBS!!! The BEST diet for a dog/cat is Prey Model Style Raw Diet....Raw meats, raw meaty bones, raw offal (liver, spleen, kidney), green tripe and salmon oil, (if you can't afford to feed grassfed meats). My Vet is astounded by the HEALTHY bloodwork from my 14 YO Aussie. I've been Raw Feeding for OVER 10 years...to 7 to 8 Aussies...and I have 10 years of education on nutritional reading too. Ask your vet how long they study nutrition in college...you'll be surprised at the answer...and "who" teaches it? The dog food companies! Sigh. Please check out www.usrmb.net for further info on Raw Diets or READ: Raw Meaty Bones by Dr. Tom Lonsdale, DVM or his other book, Work Wonders.

wow - you need to do a little more research on raw diets and the feeding habits of dogs! The argument for a raw diet is that dogs are basically "wolves" and should, therefore, eat like their wild cousins. Look what wolves/wild dogs/dingos, etc. are up against: e-coli, salmonella, perforated gut (from bone splinters), food-born parasites, as well as a whole host of other nasties that give them an (average) 5 year life-span. Also, dogs are considered "carnivorous" because meat makes up the major part of their diet. However, dogs are actually omnivors (like pigs) and will eat pretty much anything, including fruit and veggies when they can get them. The first thing wolves do when they make a kill is eat the stomach and organs of the prey (full of nutrients and vegetation). If you are going to feed your dog a "natural" diet - do them a favor - cook the meat and bones first, and MONITOR them when they've got the bones - don't let them eat the bone - only the marrow. I use Kirkland products and have been pretty satisfied. I don't think they give the best skin/coat nutrition - but I'm spoiled - I also use Breeder's Choice Avoderm dog food - which is a premium food at $40 a 36 lb bag.- so I mix the 2 with great results. Here's the only thing that gives me pause: Kirkland dog food is made in China - remember the chicken scare a couple of years ago, when pets were dying because of tainted chicken-based pet food products? So I'm careful and ready to pull the Kirkland if there's another problem (Breeder's Choice is made in the US).
