Boston, MA 1

Boston is absolutely horrible. Living in Connecticut, I was appalled by the level of racism I, as a white male, observed there. I thought that Connecticut and Massachusetts were supposed to be quite similar, because they're both part of the tourism scheme known as "New England," but, as I look at it, it seems more like Connecticut is culturally aligned with New York. In the Tri-State area (NY-NJ-CT) we do not have the overt New England racist attitude that Boston does. Hartford, Connecticut really is the farthest north blacks have a substantial urban population--they were not accepted, in fact, they were shunned, in Boston. The Boston Red Sox were the last team to racially integrate, and they did so begrudgingly (New York was the first with the Brooklyn Dodgers). Where are all the black people (and Hispanics, etc) in Fenway Park at Sox games? Or in downtown Boston for that matter? Unlike New York City, diversity does not exist in the nicer areas of Boston--the people of Boston like it this way, because they like their city "clean" and "well-kept" unlike New York. I swear to god that I have heard people tell me that they prefer Boston to New York because a) New York has too many black people (or Puerto Ricans) b) New York is dirty (probably alluding to the minority population) and c) New Yorkers are assholes (and Bostonians are so pleasant). Bostonians, especially the poor white Irish population, hate the world and anyone representing anything different--anything not Bostonian (think the Southie Busing Riots in the 70s). You will be mauled if you go into this clubby little pretentious city wearing a Yankees hat (the same does not happen to Sox fans in New York because, like the truly world class city it is, New York actually accepts people's differences). You will be ridiculed if you stick out as a tourist or a non-Masshole. People will act as if you have the plague if you are a black person anywhere in downtown Boston. People in general suck there: no pleases, no thank-yous, no excuse mes, no sorrys, but no shortage of: move!, fuck New Yahk!, buncha fahkin queeahs!.  The fans really put the icing on the cake. They are the most obnoxious, belligerent, morons you will ever encounter--ever! These people should be banned from sports bars everywhere and deported back to the "beautiful" Boston they loooove soooo much (most of them aren't even from Massachusetts, they are mostly post-2004 bandwagoners from California or Florida or Washington or Virginia who just love the city's racist-ness and, more importantly, hate the success of New York, that "filthy, nigger-filled" city). Wow, the Red Sox won the World Series after 86 long miserable years of just plain sucking--The Yankees have won 26. Most folks could care less. By the way, good luck catching up! P.S. Go New York Giants!

Hey CTguy! Sounds like you're taking you current frustration with New York's current teams a little too hard - I guess it was the Youklis game winner the other day that set you off, or is it because our Fourth of July is televised nationally and yours isn't? While your claims that Boston is racist city may have some merit (especially if you're talking about events 30 years ago) I'm not so sure that's the case now - BTW, did you see the parade for the Celtics a few weeks back? Let me see, an entirely black team being cheered by thousands of white AND black people, and no reports of any racially charged riots. I'd like to remind you that New York isn't exactly the paradise you claim it is - the Bed-Stuy riots, Abner Louima, Tawana Brawley, Sean Bell, Don Imus, not to mention those funny send ups of blacks on Howard Stern but that's OK because Robin goes along with them - well, I could go on. I love New York myself, but please don't paint it as a racial heaven on earth. And please don't tar Boston with that tired brush - I am a white man living in Dorchester in peace with his lovely black neighbors, the son of a woman whose family was from Southie, and where a racial slur was never heard - in fact, many of our family have taught in the primarily black urban school districts. There are racists here, as there are in any city, but there are also people like me who are trying to put this bad rep to bed. Did you know Boston was instrumental in the slavery abolition movement leading up to the Civil War? At that time, blacks were hung from streetlamps during the draft riots in New York. As far as championships go, yes New York has 50 between 9 teams. Boston has 31 between 4 teams. Do the math and Boston wins. Owned!

Almost everything you said was completely inaccurate. Boston is one of the most tolerant cities in this country along with places like San Francisco, CA and Austin, TX. My boyfriend who is Bengali and from New York City was extremely pleasantly surprised to come here and find how tolerant people are, compared to New York. How people didn't stare at the 2 of us together here, as they did in his city when he dated someone else of a different race. ..And it's not just him. All my friends who have visited me from other parts of the country and world have all been very pleased with the demeanor of the city, among other things. It's funny that you compare New York to Boston so much...and your choice of comparisons are also strange as they just don't fit along with hard facts. Boston has a very high black population. With Boston's size, in ratio, it evens out with NY's. We have an even higher Latin population...and not just in Boston but throughout the rest of MA as well. Do some research before you rant...you will find that there are far less racial issues going on here than 95% of the rest of the country, including New York. Of course there are some altercations in South Boston now and again (more often than not between the Irish and Italians I might add!)...but no city is perfect. And it's not just tolerance of different races that makes Boston stand out. We are one of the pioneeing cities that is very tolerant of gays, as well. MA, as you're probably aware was the first state to legally allow gay marriage. You're right though, we do take sports very seriously, maybe more so than we should. However, read the news and do your homework once in a while. Go look up how any Red Sox fans have been beaten up (or worse) by Yankees fans compared to vice versa, and then we'll talk. I'm not trying to diss New York. It's an amazing city and is so much fun...but Boston posesses class like no other and even though I've had the opportunity to move across the country I could and would never live anywhere else. So yeah it genuinely angers me when people perpetuate false facts about my city. Coming from CT and being a fellow New Englander I would have expected better from you. But I suppose it's natural...you must be a jealous person. Because whenever anyone mentions New England what does anyone think of...Boston of course. Not Hartford (which is one of my favorite cities, I might add. It is quite a beautiful city, quiet and busy at the same time.)...so you should learn not to hate but appreciate.

i must agree with the 2 comments above.
you seem to be very focused in comparing Boston and NY and the one comment that struck me was "Where are all the black people (and Hispanics, etc) in Fenway Park at Sox games? Or in downtown Boston for that matter?".
As a Boston native, I really cannot see where you came up with that assertion? I haven't been to a Sox game but have been to Downtown numerous times and every time I'm there, I see loads of blacks, hispanics, whites, asians, just about every race you can think of so I think you need to have your visions check up.
