Hey, I'm also 13 and just shot a 30-06. It doesn't kick hard, but I also had a custom gun. Yes, the bullets are pricey, but your not going to shoot that many. I urge you to look into the Marlin XL7 30-06. The regular price is about $300 less than the Remington.

Bman: The .25-06 is fine for deer to 400 yards. With any rifle to get a clean kill you need to hit it in a vital spot. I've have two rifles now in .25-06, a Rem 700 and a Rem 7600. The Remington 700 is the most popular bolt action rifle in the world. There must be a reason, eh! The .25-06 is not as popular as some of the bigger cartridges but it will certainly do the job on any deer in the continental 48 states. Not enough gun for Elk though IMO.
