Innova EVO Dog Food 3

my dog loves this food, but he has terrible gas all the time.  my vet is telling me it's because he needs more fiber in this diet and is recommending that i switch him to Iams.  Anyone else having this problem?  Other than that we really like this food

Evo turns into dust due largely to the fact that it is a 50% protein food. When you reach about 45% the moisture levels and protien levels are too high for the "bonding agents" (carbohydrates, in the case of Evo, I believe it's potoato) to keep the kibble together. It's a common problem, exasperated by rough handling of the product. Take the product back to the store you purchased it from if you notice the bag is more than 20% dust at the bottom, they will replace it (mostly because Evo gives them their money back for it) and most likely a) feed it to their animals, or b) donate it to a shelter. I've had this problem before with Evo, as well as with Core and Orijen (all feline formulas, all 505 protien). As for their part, I've talked to Natura (the makers of Evo) and that's where I got my info. Short of lowering the protien, there's nothing they can do. :(

We feed both regular Innova kibble with Evo 95% canned as a topper (about half the can). Not that it needs a topper, but we love to see the dog dance around and quiver with excitement while we prepare it. He loves the Innova but LOOOOVVVVES the Evo canned even more. Yes, I too have noticed some gas, this is very rich food. However, I would not change foods solely based on this. I'm surprized any vet would recommend Iams, a low ranking 1 star food, according to dogfoodanalysis.com. I can admit being uneducated about dog food, until we got our dog and I did some research online. However, you would think that a trained vet ought to know better. If a dog truly needed more fiber, then use regular Innova more than Evo, as it does contain some fiber.

My dog had some issues with EVO too because the protein levels were too high for her. I am all for grain free foods, but would never feed my dog IAMS. Unfortunately, your vet probably has a contract with Hills or some other vendor and needs to pursuad the clientele to use similar foods...it's really interesting when you get info about this practice. Some vets just don't see the point in giving good quality food, which I think is nuts!! Anywho, there are much better foods than IAMS with lower protein levels. If you like grain free with lower protein, try Taste of the Wild, Before Grain, Wellness Core, or Nature's Variety. If you don't mind grain, you've got a ton of foods better than IAMS- Innova, Merrick, Wellness, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, Nature's Variety Prairie, etc...

do a mixture of evo with Iams proactive weight control. 1/2 & 1/2 the dog still likes it and it did cut down on the gas. hasn't eliminated it, but we can stand being in the same room with him now.
