The basic principle of granular food is that it's less processed than kibble (also no extrusion so the granular nutritive content is higher than kibble). If you use granular food, and your dog responds well to it, then you don't need to feed kibble. Do make sure that your dog has healthy treats to chew (bully bites or tendons make for great chews) so that their gums are exercised. The granular food can be served with a little warm water if the dog won't take it dry. The warm water enhances the aroma, making it more palatable to the dog.

Most mix the granular with a kibble. The granular (I prefer the CLassic - pricer but well worth it with the oils) will stick to the kibble. Most dogs like having something to crunch and mixing it gives them that.

If I use the Abady kibble, I prefer the New Frontier - or at least the dogs do.

I also use Caribou Creek Gold kibble - boutique food developed for sled dogs and used by 3 time Iditarod winner whose dogs also won the 'Best Condition' at the Iditarod. Caribou comes in bigger bags and easier to store.

You have to look at the CALORIE levels to figure out how much to feed. The widely distriubted commercial dog foods range, per cup, from around 377 (Solid GOld) to 490ish on average for Innova. Abady granular packs 794 calories per cup and Caribou Creek kibble packs 696. BIG DIFFERENCE!
