William Ayers-Political Ally, Neighbor 1

Update:  Something for you smear-meisters to consider:  As you sow so shall you reap.  What goes around comes around.  Your resort to character assassination and smears in lieu of a discussion of relevant issues will be remembered when the Dems are in power and the GOP isn't.  Your fanning of the flames of bitter partisanship through Machiavellian tactics will likely come back to haunt you.

Original comment:  Let's see, since they're neighbors and worked on a committee together, I guess you're implying that Obama condones and/or shares Ayers' radical beliefs?  That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it?  None of the anti-Obama reviewers here have mentioned the fact that Obama has condemned in the strongest terms what Ayers did.  Why is that?  Because your partisanship prevents you from being fair?  Because Sarah Palin is doing the McCain campaign's desperate bidding to resort to smear tactics of guilt by (slight) association, since the campaign recognizes it can't beat Obama on the issues, and you feel compelled to jump on that GOP bandwagon?  Because that's the kind of people you really are, who, like McCain and Palin, will say and do anything, no matter how reprehensible, to try to win your perceived holy war against the libs?  Because, like your hero, Karl Rove, you believe that the end justifies any means, regardless of notions of honesty, truth, and morality? You're blinded by hatred.  Do you wonder why we fight so hard to keep you out of office?  Your kind has made this country what it is today--disrespected and distrusted by the rest of the world, hated by many, on the brink of financial disaster, bitterly partisan, filled with greed, selfishness, and hypocrisy.

What does that even mean? What, are you suggesting that something will happen to people who don't vote for Obama? Choose your words more carefully.

Numbah, please re-read what I said. Did I say anything about people who don't vote for Obama? Nope. I did choose my words carefully, if you'll notice. I condemned the "resort to character assassination and smears" and "Machiavellian tactics." Do you think the present smear tactics are endearing McCain supporters to Obama supporters? Rest assured, there will be opportunities for retribution, there always are. It may be as simple as freezing the GOP out of the national political discourse after Obama wins, as it appears he will, meaning there will be no reaching across the aisle to the GOP minority, and it is certain to be a minority after the election. No one can predict the exact consequences, since so many possibilities exist, but I can predict that there's always a payback time, and people who are offended by sleazy, underhanded tactics may have long memories. I'm urging an honest, moral, civilized, fair discussion instead of dirty campaigning. I'm condemning tactics of "the end justifies the means" where anything goes, no matter how slimy. I'm urging people to get their politics out of the gutter so that at some point we can try to heal the bitter partisanship that has split our country. Dirty politics only makes people want to strike back, not heal our divisions.

So does that then mean that vocal Obama opponents can count on discrimination in the workplace? Physical violence? You most certainly DID NOT choose your words carefully and make it abundantly clear that its payback time if Obama wins. What the hell kind of United States is that?

I think fox's point is well taken. But, I just don't see where all the smears originate on the right. Take on and admonish some of the worst liberal smear merchants first (or even in addition to) and you'd have some credibility appealing for civility.

EO, I didn't mean to imply that all the smears originate on the right. And I distinguish smears from negative ads. You're correct, they come from both sides. It's readily apparent, as reported in the media, that the McCain campaign has run at least twice as many negative ads, and a lot of those have been smears, such as guilt by association re Ayers, Wright, etc. I haven't seen any ads from the Obama campaign that I would consider smears, though I've certainly seen some that were negative. That doesn't mean they don't exist, I just haven't seen any. I condemn smears and dirty politics by anyone, regardless of party. Politics is a nasty business, and the partisan fighting between the Dems and the GOP is what will motivate me to support a third-party candidate if one ever becomes viable, which is a fervent wish for me.
