Thanksgiving 5

Canadians do Thanksgiving too, albeit we do it October. In fact, as I write this, we do it today. Much the same kind of thing as our American friends, complete with football (CFL style) and gorging.  I'm hosting my kids today, and preparing roast leg of lamb, baked glazed parsnips, asparagus with cashews and macadamias, with the usual pumpkin pie for desert. Add some football, a few boardgames, and a dram or two of the creature, and it should be a nice day.

To our Canadian brothers: While we don't understand why you choose to waste Columbus Day by holding your Thanksgiving day then, one of the things we give most of our thanks to would be our treasured friends from Canada.

how come it's on a different date in Canada?

Because Canadians always do things first.....

Seriously, its because the Canadian Thanksgiving was created to give thanks at the close of harvest season, whereas the American version began with a proclamation by Lincoln in the middle of the Civil War giving thanks to God for preserving the Union and strengthening the republic. (While various forms of thanksgiving had been observed in the U.S. before that date, it is at that point that it became a regular observance with a date set in November.)
