DeVry University 1

I am currently a Devry student with about a year left to graduation. Let me tell you about this school. It’s a JOKE! I spent about three month trying to get into this school and now I wish I never went there. Most of the classes are a joke and don’t require much work to actually pass them. I bought books which cost insane amount of money to just end up not even using the books. After about a year I find out that I can’t take a lot of my classes on campus. When I confronted Devry staff about this I was shocked at their response. They offered me to change to a different major which did not require for me to take many online classes. Can you say "WTH?" Even my senior project is online.... Not only am I forced to take online classes but the online classes are also a joke. I am currently taking these classes and let’s just say that no hard work is required to pass these classes. I don’t feel like I learn anything from these classes because they are so easy and require no hard work to actually pass. The Devry I go to is located in a mall... It is Sherman Oaks campus in California. Who the hell graduates from a damn mall! When an employer will ask me "Where did you graduate from?" and I will say "A mall" If you are interested in studying business I would say it is not bad school but not one of the best. If you want to study Game Art, DONT GO!! Good school for that would be The Art Institute. My boyfriend goes there so I know a lot about it and I have been there myself. One good thing I could say about Devry I go to is that there are a lot of good teachers it’s just the Devry programs suck. I just can’t wait to graduate and get the hell out of this school. It seems they are just trying to rip you off. Online classes cost same amount as on campus classes which I think they should cost less. Online classes are not as good as on campus classes and should cost a little less. I do not and will not recommend Devry to anyone.

DeVry doesn't have a "Game Art" program. They have a "Game and Simultation Programming" Bachelor of Science program. Of which I'm very much enjoying now a year into.

I'll say that I've talked with quiet a few fellow students who went into DeVry's GSP program thinking they'll get a good game developer degree. But there seems to be a number of people who drop out once they find out DeVry's programming degree actually requires several layers of well.. programming. There's very little focus on "art" and only a couple of classes devoted towards game "design" concepts. The rest of the degree is focused on math, science, physics, math, programming (from assembly level to C++ OOP), more math, and even more programming. So kids who thought they just wanted to "get into the game industry" and make games, don't seem to do so well with DeVry's highly technical course load.

I've only been taking online classes for a year, and already know how to code my own 3D graphics API. And the GSP240 class I'm finishing right now (Math for game programming part I) has taught me how to design my own graphic libraries so that I don't even need to use DirectX or OpenGL libraries anymore. It's going "behined the scenes" into light mapping, collision detections, matrix manipulations, normal calculations, etc.; all using C++ native code, no libraries. I can't wait for my Math for game programming part 2. Every week there's a programming lab to test the previous week's math material. I've learned more in this one class than in my 8+ years of trying to learn game programming on my own.

I've spoken to several fellow students who came from Full Sail and other "technical" schools and joined DeVry. They've all said how much higher the educational quality is at this school. One lady I meet even graduated from ITT and went to DeVry after not being able to find the job she wanted. I know another student who graduated last summer who was offered a job at Blizzard Entertainment before he graduated. He said they were very impressed with his knowledge of physics and game mechanics.
