Where I live there are a fair number of adherants of this religion, and they seem as factionalized as any other. Locally, the politics of their homeland seem to blend with their religion, which has led to to some internecine violence.

I don't know enough about the practices of the faith to rate it fairly, but I can say their annual holy days are tremendous parties, which works for me.

I have a friend up in Vancouver who told me that when butter goes on sale there, they buy it up in bulk and smear their hair with it before wrapping it in their turbans. Was she pulling my leg?

She's pulling your leg. That practice, as I understand it from my Punjabi friends is restricted to their priests and holy men, and only some sects of those, and then only on certain occasions.
