Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul 1

Please do not feed your dog this food. Here's what happened to my 8 yr old pitbull who had thrown up only once since we'd had her until we changed her to this food...

About a month into switching her to this food, Molly vomited once several hours after eating the kibble. It was strange b/c the kibble was largely undigested and the amount that she threw up was pretty large (ie more than we feed her in one meal). We didn't really think much of it b/c she seemed chipper and alert.

Approximately a month later we had run out of her wet food so we had to double her kibble for about 2-3 days. Apparently it was too much for her (strong) tummy to handle, so she vomited twice about 2-3 hours after meal time. She was very lethargic and wouldn't really eat or drink. Then we noticed she was shaking and started having diarrhea. We immediately took her to the vet where we found out that she had a 104.5 temp (102 is top of normal range for a dog). Her xrays came back normal as did her bloodwork and organ function profile. She's been home since yesterday and is just now starting to show interest in food.

We will never put our dog through this again by feeding her commercial food. We were already interested in the BARF (raw) diet, and this has sealed the deal. We will be switching her over to 100% raw/ natural food as soon as her tummy is up for it. This switch will also probably save us money considering we had to pay $671 for her to go to the vet...probably more than a year's worth of raw food.

Your analysis could be based on any switch from "raw" to "dry" dog food...not just this kind, especially after switching without mixing the two to get your dog's digestive system to slowly transition. It can work with a slow transition (7-10 days) from one thing to another.

Just thought you and other reviewers should know. Thank you for caring for your pet though!

Hi Dee,
I guess my first post was a little unclear... We didn't switch our dog from raw to dry. She always got a raw meatball of ground turkey with some kibble. All we switched was the kibble. The kibble was the ONLY environmental change my dog experienced. Maybe it's not all kibble, but it was certainly the bath I bought that made my dog sick. She's finally getting back to normal now after a week of being ill.

I am sorry about your pup. Same thing happened to my dog recently. And I have been trying to find the answers (my story is written above). I thought I was being too worried, everyone said it can't be food. After finding out about recalls I got very upset and it just made my worries stronger. I guess we might be two of unlucky ones and everybody, thinks its a coincidence. I hope Molly is doing much better!

Thanks for your kind words! Molly is great now on her all natural diet! I hope that Toby is doing better as well. I guess neither of us will every know with 100% certainty that the food caused our dogs to be sick, but it seems the most likely cause. Take care!
