Remington Model 700 1

Well, I too, own several Rem 700's. I have always had accuracy and dependability. However, The Remington Company has changed! In June of 2008 I purchased a Rem 700 ADL in 30.06 as graduation gift for my nephew. As soon as I mounted the Nikon Monarch scope, I noticed that the bolt handle hit the side of the scope when cammed upward! I went to my other Rem 700's and checked them and none of their handles cammed up like this one.

So I called Remington and sent them pictures. Customer Service said that there was nothing wrong with the gun so there was nothing for them to fix. Well, I paid a gunsmith to cut the existing handle and attach a longer handle and bend it for better ergonomics. He also started to to a trigger job and said that the trigger was a piece of junk and he could not do anything with it. So he put in a trigger from his own BDL for me. Nice trigger pull!

I picked up the gun, went to the range. I setup and pulled the trigger---click. NO FIRE! I took the gun back to the gunsmith, very heatedly. He apologized and kept the gun to check it over. He found that the chamber of the gun had been cut wrong so the firing pin could not fire the cartridge. We are now waiting for Remington to tell us if they are going to fix it or I will have to foot the bill for this defect also.

I will never buy a new Rermington firearm again. Not because of the defects, but because of the poor customer service.

Anyone can make a lemon, and you might have bought one. However, one example does not make a case. A couple of things deserve comment. First, I am skeptical about your gunsmith. The triggers on the new 700s are not junk, and they are easily adjusted. Because of lawsuits, Remington does indeed set the pull way too high. But this can be changed in about 5 minutes. Instructions can be found online. I just did it on two XCRs, and one of my friends has recently done trigger adjustments on several new model 700s and model sevens.

Secondly, there is a common mistake in mounting a scope which can cause exactly the firing problem you describe. I know, because I did it! I went to my gunsmith with the complaint that it wouldn't fire out of the box. Without even looking at the gun, he knew what the problem was: the scope mounting screws had been reversed; the rear screw was too long and was obstructing the bolt just enough to keep the firing pin from hitting the primer. He told me that he has seen this several times, and has never seen another reason for a 700 not to fire. I just had a second gunsmith at another shop tell me the same thing. Now, yours might actually have an incorrectly-cut chamber, but you have to realize this is quite unusual in the era of modern CNC machining.
