Finlay Fine Jewelry 1

I worked for this company (then QUIT) and it's the WORST company in the world!! I would not even no where to begin telling you how awful they are. It’s the most cutthroat job I have ever had. You come in there thinking you’re going to have a nice job, only to be slapped in the face with the most cutthroat coworkers that ever lived. And the district and upper supervisors only feed into the frenzy by always comparing you to everyone else. Everything is an open book as far as your performance goes. They want to make sure that EVERYONE sees if you make your goals or not. The job is set up to where they pit everyone against everyone, so forget about having any friends at this job, because everyone is too busy backstabbing everyone, and the company has it set up this way. Anyone who says they liked this company has a warped personality, and I say this because the only way to survive at this place is to lie, backstab, steal another’s customer, and sabotage their work. It’s the only way to survive at Finlay’s. And that is what they wanted - employees that don’t have one ounce of respect for other coworkers. I was a good salesperson - one of the best , in fact, but I could not tolerate the cheating, lying, and backstabbing that went on, and this started at the top, too..from the supervisors down the ladder to managers and then sales associates. Again I will say that anyone that posts here how much they like the place is nothing but a shill for the company, or a backstabbing employee, because anyone with a decent conscience would never tolerate the abuse this company dishes out and expects you to endure.

The training is a joke. They expect you to become an expert by watching e-learning on the computer while you are on the floor working. And forget other coworkers lending you a helping hand. Heaven forbid you might learn something and then be a threat to them. Coworkers would rather set you up to fail, so they won’t have any competition, so most new people have to learn by doing there own private research at home.

And they don’t care about standard procedures. The rules would change every week. One week it would be this and the next week that - whatever it took to make that sale. “Lie to the customer if you have to”, should be their motto.

All the jewelry is way over priced, too. To the point it’s a complete FRAUD!! Then about 4 days a week they would have it on sale at 50% off , then with some extra discounts on top of that. Then, on the days there is no sale, they want you to get on the phone and call up all the customers and tell them about all the wonderful sales coming up, which is just the same old sales they always have, like 4 days a week! And that is if you even want to call them a sale. As I said, they mark up the jewelry so much that they HAVE to reduce it more than 50% to move it off the floor.

And the quality is a laughing stock. Some of the diamonds were so bad I was embarrassed to pull it out if a customer wanted to see it up close. There was so much carbon in the diamonds they looked black. There FAKE rating scale on diamonds is such a joke (AA, AAA and don’t forget that asterisk --*, ha!) and many times I had customers flat out tell me, “this is not a real diamond ranting”, and walk out. Not to mention the many times jewelry would fall apart right in my hands as I was showing it.

When I heard they were closing all the department stores and are financially up the creak without a paddle, I jumped up and down for joy. They deserve everything they get! Karma is a wonderful thing! And the best is, all the ones I worked with and those “supervisors” will have a very hard time at any respectable job, because all they know, and are comfortable with, is how to be caddy and deceitful, not to mention the “heavy set” one that limps (you know who you are). You should be ashamed of yourself for the evil you have done to others, and the ones you “favored”. Maybe with all the time off, you and your ‘pals” can all join Jenny Craig, because NOONE will hire the lot of you. Enjoy your unemployment…while it lasts…haha.

Well said make my day. I have to share with you that I was a bsm, and the pressure they put on me to manage with an iron fist was horrific. Everyday with emails comparing your store to everyone elses. The so called "moral" and "value" that they uphold was pathetic. You are right everyday I had to hear another story about some assoicate stealing some other assoicates customers and I would have to make a decision to who got the sale. I HATED IT. Always hurting someone on my staff. It was the MOST stressful job I ever had. Not to mention the way platinum writers can break every rule in the book and still work there, while other associates whom are just meeting expectation have to follow every stupid and I mean STUPID rule Finlay had. Karma works hard for those whom deserve it...and it's your turn FINLAY....you have no excuse to get exactly what you deserve. Finlay had a policy for everything. Guess those policies are worthless now.

Yep, Yuk, worthless policies for a worthless company..

Yuk, I had my manager and her "buddy" always stealing my protection plans (would switch them in the computer). I say steal because she would tell me she was going to take them and if I got upset I would get the crap treatment and crap hours. The manager was on probation for not selling P.P's, so taking mine was the only way she could survive. I watched her "buddy" rip of customers by not refunding P.P's on returns of hers and her hoping "the customer would not notice", which the customer did not. That is plain out right stealing from the customer, all because she did not want to lose P.P's and keep that warped company happy. These people tried with everything they had to intiminate me, because I sold more P.P's and sales (when I had the good hours) then they did. When I tried to report the goings on to the supervisors, they did not care..as long as sales were fine and P.P sales were good with the manager (which were my sales) they could care less how she got them and pretty much made me feel like I was the one lying to them. Like, I'm sure i'm going to make up something like that. It did feel good when I gave my notice, but didn't feel good when the company made me feel like they protect the dogs over the honest people. So much backstabbing and crap went on it makes me sick to think about it, but right after i quit, the company went down and I am soooo happy those people are going down with it..yippee!

Well, time is dwendling down for Finlays..HA! I have to go by the host store (which is also closing and having the big, "going out of business sales) everytime I go to the bank, and I bust up laughing everytime..hehe :)

First, let me say that I worked for Finlay for over 4 years and I have mixed emotions on this situation and the other comments made.

I enjoyed my job and the company that I worked for until the day I was told we were closing all of our leased departments. I don't know what group the others worked for, but it wasn't the same as mine. Our merchandise was never on sale until the company announced its closing. That is when we began to liquidate.

The back stabbing and theiving nature in which you discribe never existed in any of my locations. I made sure of it. That is your job as a BSM to keep that from happening. If you are good at your job then you wouldn't have to worry about your team not working as one or your regional comming down on you. I ran 3 locations in my time at Finaly and never had the kind of problems with staff or merchandise that is discribed by the others. Yes, there are times that the branch would recieve defective merchandise and it is our jobs to inform the company so they can inform the vendor and recall the merchandise to send back. But, that happens in all jewelry retail.

I will not say that the upper management, ie; group managers and such, were the most honest. I know that I was lied to when I was told not to worry about my job. My regional and a few others at the group office were the only ones to give the people in the field a heads up. I stayed with my branches until the final closing date and it was hard because the upper management left it to the BSMs to do all the dirty work of letting all the associates know only limited things.

I am sorry that any of you worked for a BSM or regional that didn't care about their team. I, on the other hand, cared greatly. It was assured that my associates made their goals without having to take them from someone else. That is why I never relied on just e-learning. It was my job to train and help my team in order to make sure an associate never lied or misinformed a customer and knew what they were doing. As a BSM, our goals were only 20% of our Full timer's and only 28% for Protection Plans. As a BSM, if you can't make that goal, especially without stealing from your associates, then you don't know how to do your job and should have never been put there. I can assure you that none of the associates that ever worked with me feel the way that these others do.

All in all, I loved my job, the company I worked for, my regionals and all of the wonderful associates that I supervised and if that makes me "warped" then maybe you worked in the wrong group and for the wrong people. And now, because of so called "karma" we are all out of jobs. Thank you for wishing ill will onto good people.

Looks like they filed for bankruptcy. :)

Your merchandise was NEVER on sale until you found out you were closing. My god, I sure hope they were not pushing off that junk at regular prices, never having those "BIG WEEKLY SALES" like all the other stores did..haha

I'm happy to hear the backstabbing never went on where you worked and you didn't allow it - and you made sure of it. And you say, if you are good at what you do you should not have to resort to such things. However, being good at your job does not help your performance during a recession. I'm sure the last few months before closing were looking pretty bleak in the sales and PP area - especially at those regular prices. Hell, even the best car sales people could not sale cars (until the cash for junk this last month or two). And there you were, making those sales at regular prices, not having to resort to "those things" while every other retailer has major sales running. Yep, they all ran to you to buy overpriced jewlery at regular prices when every other Joe in town has jewlery on sale...hehe

I'm sorry if I find your "story" rather weak in presentation, however, I will keep in mind you still are carrying the Finlay sales pitch in your heart.

You ran 3 locations and NEVER had any problems other than the occasional defective piece of merchandise that the company would take care of if you "brought it to their attention. - HA! Those "gold box specials?..hmmm...talk about trying to tell the upper management that the quality was a joke and trying to pass those off as "fine jewelry" was even more a joke. Their response? SELL THEM!! Not sure what planet your 3 locations got the jewelry, but your 3 locations must have had different vendors than all the others. Unless you have convinced yourself into believing you were selling fine quality jewelry to spare a guilty conscience. The diamonds were JUNK, without even a proper grading - and here you are always selling them at REGULAR PRICE. If I have ever seen a con salesman talk a poor customer into a bad deal, you are the example I would refer to. No wonder they had you at 3 locations, or lasted through 3 locations. They wanted the most deceitful sales people they could find.

Your admittance to how upper management, group managers and such, were not the most honest and LIED to you that you had nothing to worry about as far as your job was concerned was about the most refreshing thing I saw in your post. However, followed in another stroke of the key, you praise a "few others" who gave you a heads up. Then in another stoke of the key degrade upper management who left it all up to you to do the dirty work of letting all the associates know only LIMITED THINGS. Guess you still don't see no connection between the evil upper management and you? If you really cared about your team, you would not have let upper management make you do their dirty work. You would have done the right thing and been on the up and up and not have LIMITED it to make you look the poor victim that has to do the dirty deeds.

I'm sorry you are out of a job, but I feel more sorry for the many that had to quit because they knew the company was a rotten egg. But I am happy you loved you're job and the wonderful company that lied to you, that in turn, at the end of your long service to them, made you do all the dirty work for them, as you say in your own words. I hope you find a new job you love just as much and treats you just as well as Finlay did.

Warped? I call it as I see it.
