I think expensive dog food is a total waste of money. I fed our 2 dogs Ol roy. I don't care what the experts or vets say. It's all about making money. In fact, one vet told me that table scraps are fine...he feeds them to his dog. My last dog was a dalmation/lab and lived 14 yrs. and lived on Ol Roy canned and dry food, Ol Roy dog biscuits and table scraps at least 3 times a week. Ever since we were kids, we feed all our cats and dogs practically the cheapest food out there and they were healthy, playful and lived a full life. So, that's not luck, thats proof...give me a break, they are animals. Animals have a tougher digestive system. They can handle it.
So keep spending all your money on expensive dog food. It's no different from expensive shampoos and for that matter, people food. I don't buy necassarily the cheapest food and I don't buy the most expensive.

you sir are a complete moron. you might as well feed your dog the bag instead of ol' roy products. corn, wheat, and soy have absolutely no nutritional value for dogs and are considered fillers. peoples dogs actually die from eating this food. you must be some kind of imbred retard

I guess you didn't get it...read it again. I guess we just got lucky with all of our dogs (and that's a whole lot of dogs) in that they all ate cheap dog food and lived long healthy and active lives. Some vets say dogs are vegetarians, some say they are carnivorous and some say omnivorous. I say they are all of the above. If it aint broke, don't fix it. They ate what they ate. Are you saying our dogs were unhealthy when they were in fact healthy?...I think you're the moron. So go ahead and spend all your money on the expensive stuff.

You don't need to admit being inbred, you gave it away by not comprehending what you read. I stated my dogs lived long healthy lives...as long as expected with each breed. My dalmation lived longer than her typical life span. BTW, you spelled inbred wrong.

i loved this review. i have had great danes for all of my life. they are not expected to live past ten years old. well, my last graet dane died at the age of 14 years old. his whole life twice a day he ate ol' roy complete nutrition! so this review was great!

5591kram, if I were you I wouldn't worry to much about jakkbauer, he's what the regulars around here refer to as a "dog food fanatic." These kind of reviewers write intense reviews about premium dog foods, and then leave derisive comments to anyone who would dare feed their dogs more economical food. I myself have been called an ignorant bastard and been compared to slave owners in the deep south for leaving a positive review about Ol' Roy. If you venture to other areas of RateItAll, people tend to be more friendly. But the dog food list tends to be a battleground.

I'm the troll??? You're the one who called the reviewer who left this perfectly reasonable review a moron and, I quote," some kind of imbred retard", bad spelling and all. But I guess it just proves my point. Plenty of people feed their dogs Ol' Roy dogfood on a regular basis without any problems, and I'm extremely suspicious of anyone who claims that Ol' Roy killed their dog.

I don't actually pay too much attention to most of what goes on in this dog food list, as many of the details bore me. But I do pay attention to the Ol' Roy item, as those who seem to be on some sort of crusade against it, as you jakkbauer appear to be, amuse me. It's fun to point out the idiocy in what you say. I may be a jackass, but jakkbauer, there is no doubt in my mind that YOU are both a jackass and a troll.

So you think that this statement which says the same thing I initially said to you somehow brings your claims far beyond and above mine. I find it amusing that in your feeble mind (one that finds by product and corn to have nutritional value) you can justify this as a means of a "come back". Do you eat Ol' Roy yourself sir? well you are lucky your dogs lived "fully healthy lives". but think of it this way, many people eat so called "western" or "american" diets, basically garbage and fast food and not surprisingly, heart disease and cancer is the leading cause of death. i know people who eat super unhealthy and are lucky enough to live to be 70, and i know some who are healthy and die young anyway. but logically you know that your odds of living longer are better if u eat fruits and vegetables over mcdonalds your whole life right? just because your previous dogs were lucky enough to live to 14 does not mean their diets were appropriate when they were alive. id really be surprised to see you have children in the future, and how you will argue with the doctor about why its okay to feed your kids the cheapest junk out there simply because they seem healthy at the moment. i dont know about you, but my dogs are like children to me and i care to AT LEAST make an effort to provide them with a dog food with ingredients that I wouldnt mind eating such as chicken, fish,potatoes, vegetables not corn,soy, and by products. would YOU eat the stuff they put in ol roy?

last, you think you're so smart about what you are saying, especially with the "people food" comment, well obviously you clearly not updated about the "people food is bad for dogs" claim. if anything, dogs are better off on a homecooked real food diet, or even raw diets before they will ever thrive on processed dog food, especially a dog food as pathetic and shameful as ol roy.

First of all, I eat all kinds of junk food but not regularly...everything in moderation. Second, I think vegatarians are unhealthy so I would bet someone that eats mcdonalds over someone that eats just fruits and vegetables would have more meat on their bones...probably more fat but more meat. God put meat on this earth to eat so vegetarians-keep enjoying your carrot and celery sticks. I would say someone that eats more variety is healthier. Thats how you get more nutritional value. And that's why I gave my dog table scraps along with Ol Roy.
I don't get your comment about "people food is bad for dogs" claim. Are you saying dogs shouldn't eat people food or are you saying dogs are better off on a homecooked real food diet. make up your mind. BTW, I've heard vets say dogs are vegetarians-not that I agree and I've heard some say table scraps are ok.
You mentioned you give your dogs what you eat. Well, so do I--table scraps. And yes, I do eat corn and use soy sauce...don't you?
I only listen to so called experts so far and then I gather my own opinion. For example-coffee is bad for you...oh, now its good for you...oops, now it's bad for you. Eggs are bad for you...oops eggs got the bad rap-now they're good for you. Wine/beer is good for you...oh, now it's not so good for you unless you have just so much. Chocolate, tea, first it's bad, now it's good. Make up your mind! Oh, take this drug or this pill for this ailment or that ailment...oh but wait if you've taken this so called drug then contact this law firm and you might have a claim......MAKE UP YOUR STINKIN MINDS, SO CALLED EXPERTS.
So much for experts.
As for my kids, who the hell are you saying you'd be surprised if I had any and telling me what I should feed them. He's grown up now and probably eats as healthy as you, except for he eats meat as well as vegetables.

kram, you are such a waste of time to argue with. nobody is saying we or dogs for that matter need to be vegetarians. of course meat is an essential part of a balanced diet. dogs need far greater amounts of meat than people do, and if you havent noticed already, ol'roy is lacking in that category. i was using an analogy to demonstrate that, in as basic terms as i can, ol'roy is the unhealthy stuff people eat (EXAMPLE: mcdonalds) compared to far superior dog foods out there with REAL food ingredients that can be comparable to healthy wholesome diets that people eat because they have ingredients such as chicken and vegetables in them, not byproducts like ol' roy has.

and ONCE AGAIN, i was stating that a homecooked diet for dogs (the food YOU AND I EAT minus corn, soy, and many other ingredients that are not healthy for a dog to be eating such as onions, YOU DO THE RESEARCH GENIUS) is a far better diet than feeding them ol' roy. it contains horrible ingredients, the least you can do is go to a pet store (not a grocery store) and ask the people workin there for advice a dog food made with ingredients that dont have carcinogens in them like ol' roy does...and then feed that alongside your table scraps.

seriously i could swear you are no older than 10 years old, you cant even understand basic analogies. maybe english isnt your first language. somebody else wanna take a stab at arguing with this person?

I said I feed them Olroy or other cheap dog food along with table scraps; and by table scraps I mean good food-it's just left over good food...do you understand that, genius?

Some vets will tell you dogs are omnivores (not that I believe everything I hear) but I like that belief. So you go and blow your frikin' money on expensive dog food and i'm gonna feed our dog anything we eat plus cheap dog food and guess what, my animals still live out their expected life span.
