I went to a Suntrust Bank with a Power of Attorney (POA) for my Dad in Cameron Vlg, Raleigh, NC. The first sign that the asst manager was clueless was when she said that people usually bring the account-holder with them! Duh - the reason for a POA in the first place is that the account-holder is so disabled, either physically or mentally that they cannot manage their own affairs. In the case of my Dad, he is totally housebound.

Since it was taking so long and I could forsee 10 calls to the operations center, I suggested she make a copy of the POA and I would call her back. She calls me back about 4 hours later and Suntrust does not recognize POAs for IRA accounts. A POA is an all inclusive document that covers types of accounts mentioned and not mentioned. It is a legal document recognized by the State of NC. I think a call to the Attorney General's office is in order. To me, it is kind of like ignoring a court order.

What do they want me to do---drag my poor sick 84 year old father down to their office to do business?

Contrast Wachovia or BB&T or a local institution in my parents home town, Piedmont Federal, who all met me at the door as soon as I walked through with a smile, escorted me right in, and knew exactly what to do.

They eventually decided to "make an exception" for me and recognize the POA! There is sometime virtue in complaining to the next level up!
