Should Gays Have the Right to Be Married? 3

Sticky topic. I think a civil union of some type should be allowed, but I don't think I'm ready to go any further than that. I guess one concern that I have is that the church is going to take a beating for refusing to perform ceremonies for gay couples and that would not only be unfortunate, but it would additionally be unconstitutional if we try to coerce churches into doing something that they have a religious grounds for not supporting.

I don't believe anybody favors the idea of telling churches their clergy must perform gay marriages.

What's being asked for is equality under civil law.

Yeah, but some would take the extra step, so you'll have to let me be anal about it for now. Its all right and good as long as nobody smells an opportunity to advance an agenda at the cost of infringing upon the rights of another group.

Please allow me to amend the above:

I don't believe anybody of sound mind favors the idea of telling churches their clergy must perform gay marriages.

I may be wrong, but I'm about 99.99% sure none of the proposed changes to law that would allow same gender marriages include any language that even suggests clergy should be forced to perform any marriage that they object to. For example, I'm pretty sure there are currently (fringe) denominations where interracial(sic) marriages are still forbidden.

YOU personally don't have "to go any further than that". And churches can even stay out of it if they "must". I just can't figure out what kind of person would argue against equal rights for all? What kind of human being could possibly be "worried" about anyone achieving EQUAL RIGHTS? This IS the United States after all!

How about marriage performed by a J.P.? Would that satisfy everybody?

TRUNCH253 commented 174 days ago.
I don't think so!

Gris commented 174 days ago.
Why not?
It's Legal marriage, keeps the Church-crowd from getting their Panties in a Bunch, everybody wins.

Sigh! The Iron Verdict of History shows that this position is folly.

Gris, what's your avatar this time?

Though I haven't the slightest idea what the Hell "Iron Verdict of History" means, it certainly has quite a ring to it.

Perhaps in this context it means the backlash (that came after a brief flowering of freedom under the Weimar Republic) in which hundreds of thousands of homosexual people perished in Hitler's concentration camps?

TRUNCH253 commented 172 days ago.
That sounds just about right.
