If it wasn't for the sacrifice of allied troops on D Day, we might have ended up with the likes of Dick Cheney and Karl Rove holding absolute power for more than eight years.

That remains to be seen, however we hopefully agree that totalitarianism - even when the dictator has the same prejudices as us - always leads to misery for everyone.
