Kindle DX 5

I got this for my birthday and I'm pretty blown away. The thing is incredibly thin and light - it's the shape of a paper back, but much thinner and lighter.

The reading experience is fantastic - the font is easy on the eyes, and there are neat tools like saving quotes you find interesting or looking up the definition of a word while you are reading.

You can subscribe to major newspapers like the NYT or WSJ, and have access to the big tech blogs as well. You can get magazines like the New Yorker.

After owning this thing for just 24 hours, it's pretty clear to me that the Kindle has the potential to do to book publishing what the iPod did to music. One tiny little device that can hold 3500 books? Unbelievable.

After using the prior version of the Kindle to reduce piles of books sitting in my office, I am now so glad to see piles of magazines disappearing as well in the not too distant future. Hopefully, the next version will offer color to turn the Kindle into a repository for any reading material that would have been circulated into paper form before... The ASP needs to be brought down to mass market consumer price points, though.
