DeVry University 1

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ENROLLING IN DeVRY!

I decided I needed to go back to finish my Batchelor's so I made an appointment with an admissions rep at the Alpharetta, Georgia campus. I explained that I am a single mom of a 4 year-old, and I work 50+ hours a week so online was the only way I could go. I had attended 3+ years at the University of Gerogia already, so I was expecting that I would not need much more to finish.

After obtaining and reviewing my transcripts, I was told that going part-time I would have a year and a semester left to finish and obtain my degree. It was estimated that I would need to spend about 3-4 hours online a week per class, and I would have to take 2 classes to start. I decided I could handle that and asked to be registered for classes.

I have now finished my first semester, and to truly obtain an education and not just "get by" it takes about 3-4 hours A NIGHT. I did end up with a 97 in one class and a 95 in the other, and I really earned the grades. I went to meet my advisor to determine what classes I needed next semester, and she told me I had TWO AND A HALF YEARS LEFT, not the year and a semester I was originally told. I became very angry and told her that I did not agree to this time or financial commitment. I have been sending daily emails and have had one lengthy phone conversation with DeVry. Basically, what I have been told so far is, "oh well, this is what is required and we can't change it." I was also told that _I_ must have misunderstood. I hardly think so, I am a member of Mensa and I am almost 40 years old. Let me assure you, I have my act together.

I cannot commit to 2.5 years, so now I just wasted 8 weeks. Eight weeks of being up past midnight almost every night, just to wake up at 5am for work. Eight weeks of having no real time with my daughter. Eight weeks of committing myself fully to this education. I now also have a huge debt for my financial aid that I have to repay, with NOTHING to show for it. Even if they refund the money to the financial aid company (which I am going to fight for tooth and nail), there is always extra money that the school gets that they send to the student (an incentive, I guess). It may seem like easy money, but this is $3000 that needs to be paid back at 6% interest! I am lucky that I have most of it still sitting in my account, but many would get the check and go crazy with it.

DO NOT BELIEVE DeVRY! You are going to have to pay twice as much as they say, and devote twice the time. No matter what you are told, it will change once you are enrolled! I believe that the positive reviews here ARE written by DeVRY employees. There have to be better schools out there, just do the homework.

I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience at DeVry, but I have to disagree with you completely. The admissions advisor that I worked with was completely open and honest about the tuition, estimated time per course, etc. Furthermore, with financial aid, you are the one who decides how much is dispersed each session. You can choose to request more than the cost of tuition if you need the funds for books, living expenses, etc., but that is completely your choice. The school has nothing to do with whether or not you receive a refund, it depends on how much aide you request. Perhaps you had a bad mix of admissions and financial advisors, as this all should have been clarified BEFORE you started classes. But, I would not just go pointing the finger at DeVry in general, as that is rather immature.

I personally received great service from DeVry throughout both my Bachelor's and Master's programs, and the knowledge and skills gained in my courses is invaluable. My degrees have been very highly regarded by employers, and have allowed me to advance to an executive level management position at a top financial company. I couldn't be any happier with the education and service I received from DeVry.

I would love to see your membership papers in Mensa. I find it very dificult to believe or you would most likely have been a lot more proactive.
This whole question of how much time it's going to take is one that is frequently complained about and it's always be done by people who say they are too busy and don't have enough time for their education.
I would tend to conjecture that you had your mind on a million other things and You not the Advisor made a mistake. I asked question after question after question during my initial visit and again during my trip back to sign the paperwork. There are still things I'm not 100% sure about. I have a busy life and I've been sick the last week so I know there are some things I'm not sure about. I've sent my Advisor several emails and she's been quick to respond to my concerns, the same with the Financial Aid Advsisor.
I think you are just one of those Whiney types that is never satisifed no matter how hard an organization tries, there will always be poeple like you.

Well, osiguy - you seem PERFECT for DeVry - first of all, Mensa does not provide "membership papers," membership is represented by a card - very similiar to a gym membership card that has your membership number on it that gives you access to the members section of the website (easy research to do before posting some comments about it).

Second, one of your other posts says that you are "getting ready to go to Devry :-)". Maybe before making negative remarks about posts by people who have actually BEEN in the DeVry system, you need to fully experience it for yourself first. Perhaps we are just trying to make people aware of the bad experiences we had. Of course, I am sure that if you don't do well it will in no way be your fault, but rather due to some professor having issues with your religious views. Now THAT sounds pretty whiney (which, by the way, is NOT capitalized - hmmmm, maybe you should check your own work before commenting on that of others). I think the funniest part about that was in your response to that post, you again did not check your own spelling - "maybe they saw your grammar and spelling and decided it wasn't worff the effort."

Lastly. I did not make the mistake. I never claimed to have gone into this and then after decided I did not have the time to finish my education, I alotted the time I was originally quoted and began finishing my degree. When they then tried to DOUBLE the initially quoted time, I could not do it. Do not criticize my committment. Fortunaltely I fought and fought and Devry reversed all my funds back to financial aid and unenrolled me. I would like to hear back from you a year after you have actually been enrolled in Devry.

If you did not get that the misspelling of worff was a joke and intentional, and if you didn’t get that the Capitalization of the word Whine was to bring attention to the word, then things suddenly become much much clearer.
In all of my responses I was commenting on the same level of activity I'm currently undergoing and stating that I have not seen any of the same activities myself. I was mostly referring to the sniveling babies like the one gentleman who is getting his education for free because his father works for Devry (and thusly Devry puts a roof over his head and puts food on his table and he should be more beholding and thankful to Devry), and then complains when the same mistake occurs over and over and over 5 times.
Why would you even assume the following?
1. I'm not going to do well in my education - I put months of planning and counseling with people wiser than myself into this, not a spur of the moment decision. The last time I went to school I got mostly A’s in my classes at the Community College level.
2. That if I do not do well I would blame the school on basis of religious bigotry when I haven't even attended Devry University yet (as you so eloquently put it yourself)? I will have you know young lady that when I do anything I give it my all 150%. If I fail, which is quite often in life, I learn from my failures and pick myself up and become a better person for it. I have worked hard for my education. The first quarters of school were taken up with my son in the hospital almost dying, spending time with him, going to another hospital where my wife was, spending time with her and taking 4 classes in a 10 week summer quarter and getting all A’s in my classes. I had challenges with Clark College but they were always new, they never got the chance to do the same thing to me more than once.
3. If you are referring to my comments about a teacher who flunked anyone who wrote papers with a Christian bent when he praised others who wrote on Buddhism or Islam or Atheism, is not whining about Bigotry against Christians, it's an obvious fact. And I wasn't even in that class, word gets around amongst students.
Is two and a half years really that much more out of your life in the quest of finishing your degree? Where else can you get a Baccalaureate degree in 2 years? The original incident that your Advisor told you it was going to be one and a half years, it could have been that they thought more of your classes would transfer
The very fact that you throw your supposed Mensa membership around and flout it means nothing other than arrogance and the fact that you can't possibly admit that you couldn't have made a mistake when you admit in your own description that you went into your decision the same day you were there, decries arrogance personified.
Most people that I know that are in Mensa don't go around flaunting it, most are almost embarrassed by it.
You ooze contempt, pride, and arrogance. For someone that is supposedly wise you are arrogantly foolish and need to grow up.

Your last two sentences are directed at the wrong person, they need to be turned back around on the author. It is arrogance to think that you have the right to tell me that my perceptions of DeVry are incorrect before you have even so much as attended the school.

I have given you more time and consideration than I feel you deserve. Although I have made that mistake up to this point, I will no longer continue on the same erroneous track. Good luck to you, and I hope you have a better experience than many who are concerned enough to post warnings on this site to save others the headache they have gone through.

"I have given you more time and consideration than I feel you deserve."

And you're seriously trying to tell me you aren't egotistical and conceited.

Seriously girl. I'm 49 and I have a lot more experience in life than you do and I always will. I have numerous degrees from the graduate school of hard knocks. I don't need Calculus to put 2 and 2 together and expostulate that it will be 4 either in this world or in the land of make believe.
