South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford Admits Affair

reviewed by Victor83

"ATLANTA, June 24 (Reuters) - South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who has been seen as a potential candidate for the 2012 U.S. presidential election, tearfully admitted on Wednesday he had been unfaithful to his wife and resigned as chairman of the Republican Governors' Association...."

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford Admits Affair 1

Hot news for a day or two....that is it.
To whom should this be "significant"? Let's see.....citizens of SC. Wow, there's a large chunk of the US population. Who else? Um....were there individals out there who viewed Sanford as the "great white hope" for the Republican Party? Somehow, I doubt it.
So, who does that leave? Oh yes....those who have a vested interest in impugning the state of South Carolina. God knows we have more than a few of those here.
Oh yes, and bad Governor!...bad..bad...bad...for not bending over to whatever Obama said!
In the grand scheme of things...this is about as significant as Michael Jackson's divorce.

Update: So...the stirring question of the day: Should Mark Sanford resign?

Whatever the personal opinions of Sanford, he has been a fantastic Governor. I can therefore say that I do not want to see him go.
On the other hand however, I see no other alternative.
First of all, while a Congressman in the 1990's, he said (loudly) that there should be no Impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton because Clinton had been caught in an extra-marital affair and should therefore resign. So....needless to say...Sanford help set this bar- a ridiculous trap in which he now finds himself. "What's good for the goose..."
Finally, though he may have a few supporters left, Mark Sanford is now bereft of any political allies. His support came from those who espouse true conservatism. Unfortunately, that includes the Bible-thumping "religious conservatives" in this state. This morning on talk radio, I heard more Bible verses spouted than I ever heard in a month of Sundays while growing up. So now, in addition to being opposed by Democrats and loathed by the Lindsey Gramm/ neocon Republicans of this state, the good ol' church-goers are ready to take him out and hang him from a tree while singing "Amazing Grace".
What a wonderful world.
Time to resign, Governor.

Vic, I totally disagree. I think it's significant in that South Carolina has the highest unemployment rate of any state and we are going through a horrible recession, and this guy simply isn't involved in the state's business. He's goofing off in Argentina for god's sake, and then not long ago, he was on another 'international trip' that nobody knew about. 9 times out of 10 he was bashing the stimulus on some national news network. Like I said in my review, I didn't care for that bill but he should just take the money because it's there and it's to be used. I know it's tough not to talk party politics, but I can bash the Republicans just as good as the Dems. I mean really, I told my staff I 'may go' to the Appalacian Trail...the fucker had a ticket for Buenos Aries the whole time. Sanford lied to his staff and the staff lied to South Carolina. I mean really, he's a self-serving sob and a poltical hack. Here is a quote from a Republican in the South Carolina Senate
"All we've had is lies, lies, lies," South Carolina state Sen. Jake Knotts said.
So overall, I think this is just a good snapshot of how ineffective our leaders are. That's just my opinion. Now let's go rob 'Duncan's Toy Chest.' Sanford probably even charged the state for the trip and wrote it off. I fucking hate politics, and this just pushed me to a new level.

Chalky....FYI....I live in SC. Still want to educate me on the politics of this state?
SC is NOT the most economically depressed state; nor does it have the highest unemployment rate.
You want to impugn my state? Do so in a justifiable manner. Jake Knotts is a fat-ass, real life BOSS HOG.
This is not about Republican vs. Dem, Chalky. As I said in another review, it is not SC Democrats who are to blame for ANY of this....it is the fucked up SC Republicans. They are turncoats and hypocrites.
By the way....Sanford broke no laws; nor did he violate any part of the state consitution in his actions.
But why argue with me? For some odd reason, you hate the man with a passion. He is done.
Chin up Chalky.

Hi Vic,
Honestly, I live in one of the most politically-corrupt states, and the only education I need to know is how fucked up it is (regardless of what party you hate---and I hate both). I'm not an expert on anything really, the thing going on in SC is just my opinion. There is probably some California native who knows more about New York than I do. I'm 100% confident you know more about SC than me though but this was just my opinion. The reason, I talked party politics is because you mentioned Obama. I was wrong when I said SC had the highest unemployment rate, I was wrong, it's the 48th worst according to Bureau of Labor and Statistics (12.1%). http://www.bls.gov/web/laumstrk.htm
I meant no insult. I sometimes can't stand my own State and have lived away from NY for years at a time including out West. But I mean really, the guy probably did break laws. They are already reporting inappropriate use of state vehicle....and then there is the whole lying thing. The guy is a douchebag. Anyway, where do you think Ricky Rubio will go in the NBA Draft? That guy is fun to watch!!

Chalky, I think you know that overall I find you one of the best and most entertaining reviewers here.
I was not attacking you personally.
What say we leave it there?

Chalky commented 158 days ago.
Likewise, Vic. I enjoy your reviews as well. Done Deal.

Good review Vic.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
Thanks git. And be thankful that you don't live in the "Holy Land" of upstate SC.

Wiseguy commented 157 days ago.
Did he break any laws?

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
(Edited 157 days ago)
I don't know yet Wise. No one knows for sure. There is the question of public funds being used to pay for these trysts.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
Even assuming he broke no laws though, how does he maintain cred if he stays in office, after what he said about Clinton?

Wiseguy commented 157 days ago.
If he didn't, and he wasn't derelict in his duties as governor, I don't see the problem.

Wiseguy commented 157 days ago.
The deal seems to be political gamesmanship.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
You see no problem with that contradiction?

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
I would love to see Sanford stay as Gov. I would like to think he could run for Pres. in 2012 and have a real shot.
Such is not the real world.

ayn commented 157 days ago.

Typical political hypocracy, Vic.
Isn't that how the game is played?
By the way, hi.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
Hello Ayn.

Wiseguy commented 157 days ago.
Honestly, no.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
So politically, you think it is okay for Sanford to have called strongly for Clinton's resignation due to an affair; but that the same "rule" should not apply to him?
This is my point Wise....it will be tough to make that dog hunt.
I guess we shall see.

I think that's a storm he could weather. A statement like that is political grandstanding and the only people who get worked up about meaningless partisan bluster like that are the committed opponents of a candidate. Since they weren't going to vote for him regardless of what he said, he's not losing anything.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
This morning, Fox News, every hour quoted Sanford's remarks about Clinton.
Sanford is my Governor. I like him and want to see him stay; I just don't see that happening. He is now considered something of a black eye for the Republican Party at the national level, and he has cashed in whatever chips he had at the state level.
Maybe he will prove me wrong. I would be happy if he did.

FranksWildYears commented 157 days ago.
I think if there is one thing the public loves seeing more than the mighty being toppled its a comeback from the depths. And getting the opportunity to go along for the ride by saying "I voted for him" can be very appealing. Of course it will all depend on how he conducts himself. He'll need to seem contrite and re-dedicated to his public service. But that's in the PR playbook that's being delivered to his office this morning.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
Well Frank....then perhaps you and Wise are correct and I am wrong here.
Again...this is one time I would enjoy being wrong.

By the way, I know nothing about Mark Sanford, my comments were about the arc of political popularity in general and the principle that the state of his personal life shouldn't be a factor in holding onto the job, so long as he is still getting the job done.

Victor83 commented 157 days ago.
Frank...and I could not agree more. I just think that, as I alluded to earlier, this is a trap that many Republicans have set for themselves.
If you want to make moral high ground the cornerstone of your career and the party to which you belong, my advice is this....keep wiping, even after you know your *** is clean.

FranksWildYears commented 157 days ago.
Your shit is never clean, that's why it's important to make sure none of it sticks to you.

I'd like to attribute that line to Bill Clinton, but I just made it up.
