The franchise began play in Philadelphia in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers. With the exception of 1944-45 when they were known as the Blue Jays, the team has been the Phillies since 1890. The franchise won its only World Series championship in 1980. An NL East team, the Phillies play their homes games Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, PA. Phillies in the National Baseball Hall of Fame include Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Steve Carlton, and Mike Schmidt.
