Michael wrote or co-wrote this song after having dealt with a female stalker in 1981 (but he undoubtedly had many stalkers during his life) but its arguably the greatest song he ever recored or definetly one of them and he gave the song extra life with his breakthrough performance at the 25th Motown Anniversary, thanks to his incredible dance performance (he had only choregraphed the dance steps the night before in his kitchen) along with an excellent video and it helped send his career into the next stratosphere where he joined the likes of Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
