Wellness 5

I have an 11 1/2 year old black lab. She has been on Wellness for years and never had any problems. I always get compliments on her shiny coat, her activity level is still high and she runs with me a few times a week with no problems. I've read some of the reviews on this site which concern me; however, I will specifiy I use the DRY dog food, Super 5 mix for seniors.

I recently got another lab puppy who is 7 weeks old. She has been on Purina Pro Plan from the breeder. She is doing fine, but the food contains everything it supposedly shouldn't like grain, wheat corn. Her poo was firm and black. I'm trying to transition her and have read multiple dog reviews about Taste of the Wild, By Nature, Canidae etc and since I have personal success with Wellness, I am trying to transition her first to Wellness super 5 just for puppy mix. I've noticed her poo is becoming more brown in color and she seems to be doing ok so far. I will keep watching and let you know.

I am expecting a few loose stools since she has been on a diet that contains wheat and corn etc transitioning to a diet that has more natural ingredients, veggies and probiotics etc. I'm transitioning slow since she is a puppy so I will switch for 7 days until I make a complete switch.

Any comments are welcome.

Just an update. My puppy was successful in switching food to Wellness this week. Her poop is now brown and firm and she is regular pooping right after she eats. Which is the same predictive poop schedule that my 11 1/2 year old has done for years.

Purina has corn gluten and bi products, so whatever your pet was used to eating you have to slowly switch their diet to get their stomach used to a new food. You have to switch the diet on a 25/75 % or 30/60% ratio slowly switching the old food out and the new food in over a week for best results with least stomach upset.

I just switched my labrador puppy of 7 weeks from Purina Pro Plan to Wellness and she has been soooo much better. Her poops were a little loose the first day, but at least they were no longer black in color. Also, if you pet has been vaccinated or dewormed that will effect their digestion possibly for a couple of days. The puppy was dewormed as a standard procedure and vaccinated with no major effect on her digestion.

My other labrador of 11 1/2 years has been on Wellness for years and her coat is awesome, she is active and very regular. I asked my veterinarian which food she recommends and she said every dog is different, there are lots of good foods out there and Wellness is a great choice to feed your pet. I do give only the Super 5 dry food, I don't feed wet food. I'll continue using Wellness or find another food to rotate in/out of her diet every other 6 months which is also sometimes recommended to ensure your dog is getting proper nutrients that one food may lack and another may have.

Good luck.
