Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) reprimands a brigadier general for calling her "ma'am." 1

Significant? Someone holding national elected office demonstrates arrogance, ego and a thin skin. The foundation of the union could crumble.

Disrespect to our military in any public forum- let alone the halls of the US Senate- while brave young men are fighting and dying for our freedom...I'd call that significant Frank.

FranksWildYears commented 140 days ago.
And well you may, but I don't believe that transpired in the exchange in question.

Victor83 commented 140 days ago.
Wow...you need to watch the video.

Ms. Boxer was rude, but let's not make a mountain out of this molehill.

Victor83 commented 140 days ago.
Fit... shut up.

fitman commented 140 days ago.

Can anyone spot the guy who wishes he had the power to silence everyone with whom he disagrees?

Fit, I am not trying to silence anybody...which is to say that, yes, I was trying to silence you.
This had what to do with you? I was talking to Frank. Can't you for once- just for once- shut your ignorant, lying, condescending mouth and stay out of others' affairs?
(stupid question)

I did watch the video. It was an exchange between two people doing their jobs. She was doing public due dilligence and he was representing the work that his organization was accountable for. Things got testy, one side cracked. If the exchange didn't have moments like this it would suggest that it was a waste of time. Happens everyday in the boardrooms, shop floors, halls of justice, construction sites and corridors of public administration. Kissing ass serves very little purpose.

Showing respect to the United States military when one is an elected official is not "kissing ass" in my opinion, Frank.
Sorry we disagree.

fitman commented 140 days ago.
I doubt there's any point in pointing out the fact that this is a public forum in which all are entitled to express their opinions at any time (subject to the rules of the site).

Nor is out of line to request respect from a public servant, which includes members of the military leadership by the way, when one is an elected representative of the people.

I think it's a huge stretch to paint that brief exchange as a slieght on the troops in the field or the committment of those involved to the mission at hand. Like her or not, personally I don't care, it's nothing more than typical spin and haymaking to make a big deal out of that 17 seconds of dialogue.

Victor83 commented 140 days ago.
Frank, I agree that the moronic man-hater made a big deal out of nothing. Hence...the disrespect on her part.

fitman commented 140 days ago.
It all depends on whose ox is gored.

Disrespect to an elected representative of the people of California, vis a vis calling them a moronic man-hater in a public forum, is in-bounds but asking a General to refer to you as Senator, in a Senate Committee Hearing, is out-of-bounds?

Victor83 commented 140 days ago.
BINGO!
Now the truth comes out.
Barbara Boxer has never served me...that General has, and continues to.
I have no respect for her whatsoever Frank...nor has she earned it.

By the way...final note...there is nothing in military or Senate protocol that I know of, that prohibits one from using "Sir" or "Ma'am".

jman1961 commented 140 days ago.
I posted this when I did a review on the same topic: it IS military protocol to address superiors as sir/ma'am.

fitman commented 140 days ago.
Re: ...using "Sir" or "Ma'am".

Like I said elsewhere, this is a tempest in a teapot.

However, Ms. Boxer's ire was apparently based on the fact that the other senators didn't get, "Sir", but she got, "Ma'am".

And, she didn't take it lying down.

Now, can we devote some time and energy to something a bit more important?

jman1961 commented 140 days ago.
Well, if it isn't that important (and it surely isn't), then what is it that she didn't take lying down? You see the point?
Tempest in a teapot.......have we dented the tea ball yet?

fitman commented 140 days ago.
How did those silly teabaggers get into this conversation?

Seriously, I think one would have to be female to understand why Boxer felt sufficiently disrespected to make an issue of the "Ma'am" thing.
